So i will explain a bit of each.

Disclaimer: I can be very abusive in this blog post cos I kind of have a huge hatred towards foreigners( except caucasians).

For the workforce, I think that competition between foreigners and Singaporeans'compeitions for jobs is more than fair because in the workforce, it all depends on your potential and your impression towards the company. If you are rejected in favour of a foreigner, so be it because you are just not suitable for the job. i mean, come on the bosses are professional and know how to choose among their candidates wisely so I think Singaporeans whining about foreigners stealing their job is unacceptable. They should just get over it and try again. The next step for them is to reflect on what can be improved on and why the foreigners get the job ahead of you and just try again~ ~! =D

For the places in school, the government has already given Singaporeans a priviledge by granting two balloting slots, twice the chances of the foreigners so it is the luck of the draw and this should be a fair enough system so it should work out well.

Now for the best part of my blog post, COMPETITION IN SCHOOLS, firstly, I personally dislike classmates from the People's Republic of China because they dont really fit in with the Singapore people although we have the same culture. it is just the way we behave, the learning environment, etc it just doesnt bodes well, this is from my personal experience. The second point is about scholars. Firstly, scholars are studious, smart, intelligent but some are going really overboard. I can understand that they are treated very highly back in their country cos(DUH) they are scholars and they tend to be more selfish, eg. refusing to help classmates in need, not bonding with the class, being antisocial and only wanting to get/receive from others without sacrificing themselves. This is absolutely absurd for me personally as I am facing this situation this year.

Thus I think that the government should not be wasting anymore time dealing with foreigners in the workforce, or in schools places and focus on competition in schools

An ordeal with street donations

Today, I went to Atrium @Orchard to do my CIP. I had a pretty interesting and enriching time down there. I had to stand by the road and ask for donations. Pretty fun though!

However, when I first started the 4 hour stint, my friend and I decided to slack for a while and we went to the Cathay because we dowan to be with the others who wet downtown to plaza singapura.

Many people just shook their heads and declined politely. I took about 5 minutes to get just my 1st donation. I was shocked by the disatrous reception offered by people. So completely ignored me and just walk away. My friend was like spouting vulgarities softly, cursing everyone that declined. We then had a criteria when looking for people to donate too! First let me share with you some of the criteria my friend and I set when we look out for people to persuade them to donate any amount of money or buy our wristbands:

1) Beware of singles as they normally look very gloomy and have total no interest in what we are selling. Sometimes you have occasional singles who fork out money, but most of the time they are self-centred with their own world.

2) Families or young couples or even 14 year old youngsters are quite kind-hearted and though they may only donate just that few cents, they were the odd ones out who were more generous than the other people and the cents they donated bandaged the hurt caused by people who rejected to donate to us or just simply turn an eye away.

3) People who are carrying bulky items, engrossed in conversations, talking on the phone or walking so briskly are those who normally would not care to leave a footprint near our wristbands as they cannot take their wallet out while they are busy with something else.

During that time, many people declined. To my horror, some people even turn around to walk away , not wanting to face us while others put their hands in their pockets, pretending to fish for some coins, only to walk away! What kind of people are they? Is it so difficult to just decline politely if you do not want to donate. I am really angered by such Singaporeans actions. Why should they not donate? They should not leave the poor and needy in the lurch and just care about themselves!

Indeed, it was a really good experince for me. Not only did I learn more about such street donations, I also help the poor and needy. The only thorn in the flesh was the anger of people not donating and not being helpful which really made my blood boil.

However, some may argue that what if the charitable organisations is not reliable. Come on the NKF and the monk incident is way over, cant we put some faith in the money donated will be used for a good cause? Hmm, let me know your thoughts

Task 2

1. Point of View
In this poem the poet felt sorry and terrible for the children who are being "captured" and locked in the misery of war as he stated that the these children will not see the light and he asked will the children be given a candle, a chance, a chance to learn reading and dancing. The children cannot flee from this gruesome war and ccannot learn and read, unlike a normal child

2.Situation and Setting
In this poem, the situation is in a war where children need to be able to fight and defend themselves or their families, either on the battlefield or escapting from potential captors. These are evident as the poem stated that "There are children in the darkness Who someone will teach to fight" and "Or will a war consume them". The setting is that the children being stuck in a wartorn country or region

3.Language/Diction
In this poem, the words the poet use were effective in showing the terible state the children are in because they are engulfed by war. In this poem 4 stanzas are used and in each stanza, there are 4 lines. There are some repetition in the poem like "There are children in the darkness" which is used to emphasis on the misery of the children being stuck in the war and words like "Could we" are being repeated. Most of the words at the end of each line rhymes with the previous word at the end of the previous line, placing more emphasis on words like darkness, fight and right.

4.Personal Response
This poem let me understand the poor and astonishingly bad state of the children that are being stuck in war and make me ponder whether i have taken the peace in my country for granted. ALso, i am more aware of the state of children in war torn areas liek afganhistan and Iraq. They are very pitiful and helpless because they were unfortunately placed in such a bad state.

End of task

Task 1 for online learning

I will be doing on the poem , Children in the Darkness:

There are children in the darkness
Who have not seen the light
There are children in the darkness
Who someone will teach to fight

Chalk and blackboards will not be
To this door there is no key
From this life they can not flee
And these children are not free

Could we simply light a candle
Could we give them half a chance
Could we teach them how to read
Could we teach them how to dance

Or will a war consume them
Their body and their soul
Will their life and blood be poured
Down some endless thirsty hole

Back into the darkness
From which there is no flight
Back into the darkness
Into which there shines no light

Henry M Bechtold

Analysis:
The poem's conflict is that the children has been living in the shade of war for their whole life. They are either being forced to take up arms or are constantly trying to evade and escape the horrors of it. The poet is concerned that the children living in such a gruesome environment, unable to pass their lives like a normal kid, going to school, learning, playing, having fun. The poet feels sorry for the children also.

In the 1st stanza, the children are described as being in the darkness and Who have not seen the light, which means they havent explored out of their usual war environment as they have to fight in the war or at least be on guard all the time. They are unable to learn or read. This makes the poet feel really pitiful for them because of their orthodox lifestyle.

As the poet said, " will a war consume them, Their body and their soul, Will their life and blood be poured, Down some endless thirsty hole"

This tells me that the poet feels that the war is almost like destroying the children because it deprives them and makes them really berserk about such crazy lifestyle. They are unable to go to school, they cannot escape it. Thus, the poet is kind of giving a sigh at the last stanza because he knows that nothing can be done to help the course of this and the chidlren are resigned to their fate. However, it stills evokes sympathy and touches the reader's heart as he said that the children have to be sucked back into the darkness of war. He is also condenming the wars which has torn apart families, destroyed the children soul and heart and shattered the peace.

End of Task

More about the poem
Background:
The poem Childeren in the Darkness by Henry M Bechtold is talking about the children which are captured during the war and are forced to learn how to fight instead of learnikng things that are thought in school, so they could become soldiers i n the future. Theses children were held captive in places that are very dark and these children could not escape at all. These children are not given a chance, they could not read and they could not dance. Their lives will be destroyed in the war suffering very terribly.

Inspiration:
The poem Children in the darkness by Henry M Bechtold is written in the year 2010. This poem was written when Henry M Bechtold was sitting in his hotel room in Saigon just before Christmas 2009 and was trying to write a poem about the girls who work in the park and how badly men treat them. He was angry but unable to write anything that did not sound trite or weak. He looked at the TV and the news was on. He did not know what the news reader was saying but in the background was a photo of a small boy with a helmet and an automatic rifle. This poem flowed out. The words just came to him and he typed as fast as he could to get it all down.

Sabbaticals

During the past week, I have been through the sabbaticals which was held in the last week of the erm, which is this week. I chose aviation science and bet 608 points on it and got in easily, saving m e lots of points. People may ask, why make such a rigid last digit, well, it is a good strategy to pip some of the others who also bet 600 points, but my last digit pips them, it is a really good strategy.

So far, the sabbatical has been exhilirating. During the first 3 days, we were introduced to the basic of aviation by a representative from the Asia Stimulation Centre. He was previously from hwa chong and very glad to return and pass his knowledge back to us juniors. We practised landing on the first day on the flight stimulator and the remaining 2 days were used to do some acrobatics and war fighting. Although it was a hefty price to pay($100), I think it is worht it as we tried the flight stimulator, pretty new to me. I would be very interested in such programmes next time.

The final 2 days were used to build a glider. My teams glider came in 2nd, It flew quite a bit, ha the secret was to position the rudder so that there is less air drag. I learnt a lot this few days and this valuable experience will be forever etched in my mind.

Oh I forgot, we also had an air race to navigate to different checkpoints, my team came in 5th because we were a little slower in calculating, but very accurate in our calculations, thats a good thing, Slow and steady!

Ok please comment and tag on my blog. Bye!

2 days of elearning

Today marks the last day of the 2 day elearning period, it has been a great learning experience for the sec 1s cos it is their first time while for the rest, it is just a normal thing and nothing specialabout, just doing work in the comfort of our homes. The reason for this homelearning, unlike previous times were that the reason for the homelearning this time was becuase teachers need to go for an education conference while the previous time was because of H1N1. I think that the homelearning is fruitful and conducive for learning and it is relaxing for the students as they had jsut gone through weeks of tests and mugging.

Today, I would like to talk about the earthquake in chile. First, let me show you the news article about it:
The 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile - one of the most powerful recorded - has killed more than 700 people, but the figure is expected to increase. Troops are being deployed to help with rescue efforts and prevent looting. A curfew is enforced in some areas. Basic supplies are to be distributed as rescuers reach worst-hit areas.

The government has started its emergency operations to deal with the destruction caused by the massive earthquake. Juan Salazar of ACT member FASIC, is a member of the government's National Emergency Committee. He says damage is worse than reported. "The information that arises each time indicates that the effects are much greater than originally assessed," Salazar says. He has met Chilean president Michelle Bachelet for discussion on the emergency response.

"The city is in chaos"
Worst hit is Concepcion. The president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile (IELCH), Rev. Gloria Rojas, reports that the situation in the city is chaotic, with much destruction. Some affected families are housed in church buildings and have lost everything. Many people are staying on the streets because their houses are partially destroyed or who fear new aftershocks.

It is starting to rain in the region, increasing fears the situation may worsen. No fuel is available, which makes movement difficult, and water is scarce. Communities are using bottled water. They are sharing food with the nearest neighbors. The Lutheran Church is ready to assess the affected areas together with other organizations.

ACT support
ACT Alliance General Secretary John Nduna says many ACT members are ready to support the work CWS is doing in Chile, and some are already in place. "Our members will try to supplement the effort of the government, especially in communities where our local partners have been operating for years."

Church World Service works with two Chilean agencies, FASIC (Fundacion de Ayuda Social de las Iglesias Cristianas) and IMECH, the Methodist Church of Chile. As part of the international ACT Alliance network, CWS will support local partners in assessing the situation, and will then decide whether to offer further assistance. 1.5 million homes destroyed
President Bachelet said two million people had been affected by the earthquake. It is feared the damage may cost tens of billions of dollars.

Restoring public service
Jose Abumohor, of Chile's national emergency centre, said efforts were already under way to restore public services. "The aim is as soon as possible that we manage to reach a state of normality," he said. Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez said Chile did not want aid offers to be "a distraction", adding: "Any aid that arrives without having been determined to be needed really helps very little."

Source: http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/fromthefield/222031/126745894284.htm

I msut say that mother nature has been ferocious of the late. 2 earthquakes in the spaace of 2 months is horrendous and has cause wholesale destruction to 2 very unfortunate countries. With an unfortunate earthquake, Chile's police and rescue forces will be stretched to the limit and their already recurring economy will crumble further, also, they have to spend money to repair the damage again, it is a real money drain and chile would not be able to cope. However, the coutnry should focus on rescue work now to make sure that all survivors can be saved. Down here in singapore, we should count ourselves lucky not to experience such devasation as we are not located very near a plate tectonic and we are protected by several islands. However, we must help those in need and donate food and money generously to them.

I must also praise the other countries for alerting and evacuating the coast line as soon as possible once thee threat of an earthquake emerged, luckily, the tsunami was not as wicked and powerful as expected. However, the authorities have been ridiculed at for creating a false alarm. I think that that should not happen, it was just a precautionary measure and the authorities are doing their job.

On a final note, I would like to count my blessings for living in a safe country but vow to donate generously to help those in need.

Please comment!

Elearning assignment- Learning profile and maycomb

To start off my blog post, I would like to say that my learning profile is musical and logic smart. I think that the multiple intellegience test is quite accurate in determining my learning style. Although the question may seem funny, it is quite useful and reliable. I feel that my learning style is to do things using music as it has a rhythm and I feel a strange connection to it. My second learning style is using logic and critical thinking while learning. My weakest is nature smart and i feel it is quite true because I hardly concern about things around me.

I will be doign 2 tasks for the assignment, the first one is the musical component and I am going to write a poem about life in Maycomb town:

Life in Maycomb with just a bore,
Just another day? There could never be more!
All day long doing the usual routines,
Life couldnt be more meaningless

A sparkle to the life,
And brighten up the county,
With some enjoyable activities,
Life wouldnt be a bore anymore,
But there is more

Urbanisation to the county!
A new hubbub city life,
Life was a breeze
An unimaginable wave of ecstasy

Gone were the boring old towns,
Up comes the buildings and entertainment facilities,
And thats the transformation,
Of a tired old town,
To a bright city with new hopes and aspirations
It can bring daily,
Life is great afterall.

The next assignment I am going to do is naturalist. Although it is not what I am supposed to do but I think that logical thiking has a connection to nature so i will attempt to do it.

A mockingbird is a group of New World passerine birds fromthe Mimidae family. They are best known for the habit of some species mimicking songs of other birds and the sound of insects or amphibians. The mockingbird is gray on top and white on its underside. It has white patches on its wings that look like bars; a long black tail with white outer feathers and a long, slender bill. Males and females look alike. The mockingbird is very territorial. It dives and attacks intruders that come too close to its territory. It may even attack its own reflection! A mockingbird lives in open country with thickets, farmland and desert brush. I believe that there are mockingbirds in Maycomb as there are many farmers there like the cunninghams and there is more bushes and tickeets which is the preferred habitat for mockingbirds. Thus there are mockingbirds in Maycomb as it is their preferred habitat, maycomb was a countryside town and hardly have any buildings, just farmland and bushes all around, it is also vividly described in the book too. To accomplish the theme, I believe that maycomb is a good place to live in because you dont have any worries and all day, you can relax and live a very comfortable life as there is only farming to do and time can pass very slowly.

I welcome any comments you may have about my posts and poems. Between Sunday and yesterday, an estimated 150,000 people visited the island, 24 per cent more than in the corresponding period last year.

Sentosa Development Corp's chief executive Mike Barclay, noting this figure excluded those who drove or took a bus directly into RWS, said the higher visitor numbers could be a result of new attractions like the Wave House and people nipping over to RWS after first entering the resort island.

Sentosa's other attractions, such as the Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom, have had 20 per cent more visitors, as has the Sentosa Luge & Skyride. I will now discuss if it is a boon or bane. I also hope you all can comment on it. There should also be a feature article in one of the Straits Times in the coming week so look out for it. Ok, I think that the opening of the resorts wworld can be a boon or a bane. On the bright side, It can generate more jobs to reduce unemployment and Singapore’s attraction to foreigners will be boosted as the new resorts world boast a casino and a theme park and several hotels, shopping malls. It will definitely cater to the young and old. Families should make up the majority of the visitors, followed by the young adults. Singapore’s tourism will get a much better image and the Singapore’s economy will no doubt be much better as the casino generates revenue as visitors pay for admission fees. However, I feel that such a small country will be unable to cope as there are 2 resorts and a lot of manpower is needed. Also, the locals may get influenced by foreigners, who are much more experienced in poker. This may lead to cheating and higher crime rates too.

Also, other areas like the tour buses to genting which was once a popular getaway, would suffer as less Singaporeans go to genting to enjoy the theme parks. Moreover, the Escape theme park, once singapore’s favourite, would have to be demolished as no one wants to go there anymore. Singapore take small steps in attracting foreigners. They should have built just 1 IR instead of 2. They should really learn from other countries like china. Singapore is inexperienced and in conclusion, I doubt it will be a real success and there goes our working population’s income tax!

I would like to hear all your views. What is your first impression?

HE IS RICH OF COURSE!!!

So, a typical singaporean mindset will be that you are rich if you own a car and you are "poor" when you take the public transport.Basically, owning a car shows your financial status. That's why more Singaporeans decide to buy a car so that they wouldn't look poor.

The first thing the government should do is: Change The mindset of singaporeans.
By changing the mindset of singaporeans, they would start to take public transport and not buy a car anymore

The second thing the government should do: They should increase more bus trips and train trips. This will make taking public transport more attractive as people can get to their destination faster.

The third thing they should do: THEY ALSO HAVE TO TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT! Have you ever seen an mp or government officials taking the public transport? I believe that their mindsetis the same as a typical singaporean. I think that these people do not want Singaporeans to think lowly of them. They should lead by example. If they themselves do not change their mindset, do you think singaporeans will change?

This are some solutions. I hope you have enjoyed reading it.

Singaporeans: Kiasuness IS REALLY BAD!

To start my post, read this short mail by a local woman:

Why I rush into the train
by Mdm Luo, via News Hotline (6822 2268)

05:55 AM Feb 2, 2010

"I am a mother of four young children. About two years ago, I tried to board the MRT with them during rush hour. My two older children managed to squeeze into the train - but the other two and myself were unable to make it inside. Thankfully, the older kids alighted at the next station, where we were reunited. As a result, today, I tell my children to squeeze into the train regardless of whether people are alighting or not. Perhaps SMRT can have a cabin specially reserved for pregnant woman, those with children, disabled people and old folks so that we can be assured of a seat on the train"

Adapted from Today online

Proper post:

Here is a kiasu mother who teaches her children the wrong thing. Quoted:"I tell my children to squeeze into the train regardless of whether people are alighting or not." What KIND OF MOTHER IS SHE. The SMRT consistently telling people to give way to alighting passengers, who cannot miss their stop. The train driver always allow maximum time for passengers to enter so that there is no need to rush into the train. The first thing the mother did wrong this: Why should you squeeze into the train when it is full. Is there any harm in waiting for another one?

The second thing is that the mother metioned this :"Perhaps SMRT can have a cabin specially reserved for pregnant woman, those with children, disabled people and old folks so that we can be assured of a seat on the train"

THOSE WITH CHILDREN. THE ADULTS LIKE HER WILL GET A FREE seat. So all she wants is just a free seat for hrself and her children. SELF CENTERED woman. I could not care less about her. The worst thing is that her voiceout has been published on the newspaper. GIVE ME A BREAK MADAM!

I had many ordeals with such mothers. Let me tell you about one incident:

I was on the 67 bus on my way home. Two woman with two children each squeezed up the 67 bus despite the full load. They kept asking people to move in, thinking that there should be more space on a bendy bus. However, it was already full and they continued to push into the bus. Some people had to get off in anger. Then, they started asking their children to go look for seats. The children protested of course. They were forced to by their parents and they had to squeeze frther into the bus. On the next stop, there were 2 seats. Despit the presence of an elderly man nearby, they charged forward to get the seat, not even letting the children sit!

Everyone on the bus was giving them cold glares. Me? My blood was boiling at a 100 degrees~! WHAT KIND OF mothers are they? Not letting their children sit? Asking the children to look for a place in such a crowded bus? Setting a bad example by not giving up the seat to those in need? I had definitely no respect for both of them. I am sure there are MUCH more in Singapore. I hope that people like such housewives would just do a self reflection themselves. GET LOST!

Any comments?

Foreign talent- Boon or Bane

This topic relates to my school and my class especially. And as you know, almost half the classs are malaysians scholars, which are dubbed "foreign talent". I wonder if it is a boon or a bane. Firstly, Singaporeans and malaysians have somewhat of a different learning style, which seems distinct among us students and vague in the eyes of the teachers. For instance, the malaysians here are "scholars" and we are just the top 5% of students in Singapore. Also, the malaysian scholars must have gione through tedious selection and training in preparation for learning here.

Down here, we are just given a huge exam we work hard on and we all receive our education in primary school from different schools with different techniques. There will be a somewhat distinct gap in the standards of the students , especially when half of the class are malaysians. One half will be too good and the other half will be too weak. Take for example maths and chinese, the malaysians scholars have a much faster learning pace and the teachers have to balance it out.

Also, as a "future school"class, it should have more Singaporeans as the brain drain tactic is fast diminishing in its results. So whats the point of investing? Thus, i would like all your opinions on this topic, singaporeans and non-singaporeans alike.

PS. This is seriously no offence tks ;)

Future school, new timetable, new exam critiria, more hectic schedule will lead to too much pressure?

Dear all,

Today I am going to discuss this question. is the future school, new exam criteria and new timetable adding a whole load of pressure to the students' already huge amount of workload?

I think my answer to this question is an absolute 'yes'.

Firstly, I feel that the new exam criteria is too complicated and contains too much things a student needs to achieve this year. I feel that the different things the school wish to train us can be broken down instead, other than ploking just one whole lot and expecting us to complete all tasks year in year out. This is kind of overdoing for the students.

Secondly, I feel that the future school indirectly contradicts the whole point of the extended time the teacher has due to the new timetable. If one period was 40 minutes, we can use it for the teacher to engage our class in learning(which is exactly the point of this programme)

Also, normally the major subjects are also given another 1 hours and 20 mins period, this can be used to do some research or activities requiring a longer period of time. This approach will be must more appropriate for future school. Now that we are having 1hr or 1 and a half hour periods instead, we meet our subject teachers lesser during the week and some lessons may be too far apart for teachers to conduct constructive lessons on consecuetive days as students may need revision if the days of the lessons arte far apart. This wastes time and defites the entire purpose of future school also.

Thus, I conclude that the new exam criteria, future school and new time table will add to the already overloaded bag of stress the students are carrying daily

Views on new school stuff

Ok, to fufil my at least 2 posts a week promise, I am going to post about my veiws on the new things in sec 2. Ok, the first thing I would likek to talk about is the new timetable structure. I feel that the new timetable is much more 'energy-sapping' than last year. It requires us to spent much more time studying. I dont think it is good as students are students studying non-stop for 6 hours, with just a 40 minutes break in between. Also, lessons are much longer. This is not feasible. Students will easily get restless, it is really boring just sitting in class for 1 and a half hours. Also, some 'not-só-fun' lessons has been lengthened while fun lessons like art/IS/Music have been shortened. I must say that this timetable is really taxing and quite tiring as it reads like 'learning for 6 hours' to me.

Another thingn is the new exam criteria. I think that it is quite messy and also, it demands a lot on the students. Also, I found a mistake in it. In the ace and OP, you can choose 3 subjects other than the languages. However, take out Infocomm Studies and you will get just 3 subjects left. So basically it is just an auto choice and the 'choice' thing just makes it sounds good..... Also, it means we have to concentrate on everything, projectc work, current affairs, school work, EP3, exam etc.

So in conclusion, the new timetable and new exam criteria doesnt sound that good and demands a lot from the students. Aww this is going to be a looooonnnng year

New Blog!@

Hello all,

Welcome to my blog. ;) I will be posting at least twice per week.
